Breast Self Examination – Why and When

For some, the anxious thought of discovering a lump prevents them from doing this all-important self-test. I know, because many of my friends and I share that feeling. It’s fear of not wanting to discover what may be there… or not!
However, studies show that regular breast self-exams (BSEs), combined with an annual exam by a doctor, improves the chances of detecting cancer early. Moreover, most women have some lumps or lumpy areas in their breasts all the time. Eighty percent (80%) of lumps that are removed are non-cancerous (or benign).
When is the best time to do a BSE? Every month, examine yourself several days after your period ends, when your breasts are least likely to be swollen and tender. If you are no longer having periods, choose a day that’s easy to remember, such as the first or last day of the month. Making BSEs part of your monthly routine will familiarize you with your breasts, so that you will immediately notice any unusual changes.
